Nature’s Bounty
Moumita Roychowdhury
Nature plays a key role in my work – captured through the spontaneous flow of watercolours and through my bold brush strokes. I like to take inspiration from the colours and moods of nature which changes like the myriad shades of human emotions. Nature changes her mood every second and every mood offers endless inspirations. In these pieces, I have endeavoured to capture the transient beauty of nature, moments in time and emotions it evokes, in bold rich colours. I have let the movement of my intuitive brush strokes speak the simple language of blooms, birds and bounties that nature offers every day.
About the Artist
Moumita Roychowdhury is a multi-disciplinary visual artist and art instructor based in Waterloo. Never studying art professionally, she loves to call herself a life-long learner and self-taught pursuer of art. Painting in watercolours has been her first love, but she also loves to experiment with soft pastels, acrylics and inks. In her words, “Though I had always been drawn to art since my childhood, I had never thought of having a creative career. But my love for the art remained rooted deep inside me. In 2015, I moved to the city of Waterloo in Ontario from India. I started to pursue art in my spare time as I juggled my life as a new immigrant to Canada, raising a family and working a full time job as a consumer insight professional. Over time, I found that I was making art more and more, even spending sleepless nights and what was once a hobby now took up a significant part of my life. I realized that painting was my happy place and it gave me a sense of calm whenever I took up my paintbrush.”
She joined Kitchener Waterloo Society of Artists in 2015 and Artspay in 2019 and started to show her art at exhibitions around Kitchener-Waterloo. She won several accolades for her work in many of these juried exhibitions, as well as live art competitions like The Brush Off and Art Battle. Last year, she won Gold award for best local visual artist by Waterloo Region Record.
In 2019, Moumita realized that sharing her love for art through teaching was very fulfilling and started teaching children and adults. Since 2020, she started teaching at the Homer Watson House & Gallery in Kitchener.
In her words, “I find happiness in every opportunity to create art, be it for a live painting event or an exhibition or my workshops and classes. I seek to encourage others in their creative pursuits and helping them in their art journey. I start with an idea, a scene or a photo and I gradually let the colours and brush strokes take over and create their own story.”
