Opening reception: Ashley Culver - Open wide to pronounce its name as well as to ingest it & St Marie φ Walker: A(d)version.

  • Open Sesame 220 King Street West, Kitchener, ON N2G 1A9 CANADA (map)

Ashley Culver speaks about the photographs and sculptures in her ongoing exhibition "Open wide to pronounce its name as well as to ingest it."

The title—a line from Francis Ponge's poem "The Orange"—reflects how the Toronto-based artist considers the refuse from an ordinary fruit as both physical and conceptual material. The photographs in her series O index found orange peels and their urban context; her bronze casts of orange peels capture the twisted forms they took on as they dried.

"Reframing these overlooked materials presents the objects as things to look at and observe," wrote Culver in her artist statement. "Questioning how ordinary objects are seen, or rather if they are seen. A call for attentiveness."

Open Sesame will also celebrate its second Lèche Vitrine project window: St Marie φ Walker's installation "A(d)version." Lèche Vitrine is a collaboration with Cafka (Contemporary Art Forum Kitchener and Area) made possible by the Region of Waterloo Arts Fund.
